Book 3 Page 53

All in a meditative haze

Upon a rock I gazed, all in a meditative haze wondering;

“O rock! how can I know you better?

you who stand defiant out in the weather.”

And the voice of the rock revealed itself, saying;

“I am a rock, I am sturdy and strong.

I live a life which is very very long,

but I would give up my long life, for a short human one.”

Upon an onion I gazed all in a meditative haze wondering;

“O onion, what is the life that you bear?

as my eyes shed a human tear.”

And the voice of the onion revealed itself, saying;

“I am an onion and like you, I have many layers.

Upon me you may shed your tears,

but it is me who weeps for the human years.”

Upon myself I gazed all in a meditative haze wondering;

 “O self, who are you that thinks?

who wonders here and there within the time it takes to blink.”

“I am that which is in all.

I am the large, I am the small.”

“I am that which makes everything whole.

I, am, ‘soul.”’

“I speak for all things, I am all things.

I am that from which everything must spring.”

I am the rock,

I am that which springs from the soil.

I am life in constant recoil.

I am old,

I am new,

I am everything,

I am you.                                                               © Written by Dominic John Gill www.poetry.net.au  dominicj7@poetry.net.au  26/6/99
