She never said a word

When I didn’t go to college like my mother wanted me to,

she never said a word, but I knew what she thought.

When I married the man of my dreams I knew my mother disagreed.

But she never said a word, but it was often written on her face.

When my husband and I decided not to have a child, she was bitterly disappointed.

But she never said a word, but I knew it tore her heart.

When my mother died last week, she held my hand and looked at me as if she loved me.

But she never said a word, but I knew she did.
