Book 37 Page 49

I stand before Jesus

I stand before a man; his name is “Jesus.”

He frightens me in his ‘familiarity.’

He frightens me in his ‘greatness’ and his ‘simplicity.’

He frightens the ‘me,’ within me.

He frightens me for I know; he is just a man like me.

Yet how can a man of such ‘powerful’ be ‘so humble!?’

How can a man of such ‘statue,’ care to talk to me!?

‘Jesus’ truly frightens me.

And so; as if I did not already know that he also knew, I asked him;

“Jesus, why do you frighten me so”?

And he replied, “I know why but if I were to tell you now,

you would only be frightened even more.”

“Please!” he said, “do not be afraid.”

And in my heart I was clad that he did not answer me,

for in Jesus’ eyes, I could see a man of ‘immensely brazen,’

- an immensely confrontational man – “confrontational” merely by his presence.

No! I did not want him to frighten me any more / or any longer and so, I hurriedly left his company.

But somehow it seems as though he left with me,

though I could see him standing there in the fields where he stood.

How could such a simple man make me feel so!?

How could ‘innocence’ be so ‘powerful’?

And so for the rest of my life I was plagued by the question;

who is this man they called; “Jesus of Nazareth!?”
